this year i started writing down every word i came across in a book that i didn’t know, or only half knew, then looking up and logging the definition. why? because i love words, lists, learning, reading, knowing—all of it, really. it’s still november, but here’s my 2025 reading vocab list so far~
Anapest: a metrical foot consisting of two short or unstressed syllables followed by one long or stressed syllable. Carbuncular: related to or resembling a carbuncle, which is a painful, pus-filled skin infection, similar to a cluster of boils. Dysphemism: a derogatory or unpleasant term used instead of a pleasant or neutral one, such as “loony bin” for “mental hospital.” Perspicacity: the quality of having a ready insight into things; shrewdness. Polemical: expressing or constituting a strongly critical attack on or controversial opinion about someone or something. Rejoinder: a reply, especially a sharp or witty one. Salient: most noticeable or important. Specious: superficially plausible, but actually wrong. Incommodious: causing inconvenience or discomfort. Rhetoric: the art of effective or persuasive speaking or writing, especially the use of figures of speech and other compositional techniques. Lexicography: the practice of compiling dictionaries. Corollary: a proposition that follows from (and is often appended to) one already proved. Solecism: a grammatical mistake in speech or writing. Otiosity: the quality or state of being otiose, meaning unnecessary, useless, or superfluous. Diaphanous: (especially of fabric) light, delicate, and translucent. Lemniscate: a figure-eight or infinity-shaped curve found in mathematics, specifically in algebraic geometry. It's also known as a "lazy eight" and is represented by the infinity symbol (∞). Syllogism: an instance of a form of reasoning in which a conclusion is drawn (whether validly or not) from two given or assumed propositions (premises), each of which shares a term with the conclusion, and shares a common or middle term not present in the conclusion (e.g., all dogs are animals; all animals have four legs; therefore all dogs have four legs). Scurrilous: making or spreading scandalous claims about someone with the intention of damaging their reputation. Ebullient: cheerful and full of energy. Weald: the Weald is an area of South East England between the parallel chalk escarpments of the North and the South Downs. Shibboleth: a custom, principle, or belief distinguishing a particular class or group of people, especially a long-standing one regarded as outmoded or no longer important. Maundering: talk in a rambling manner. Lacunae: an unfilled space or interval; a gap. Ardor: enthusiasm or passion. Precipitous: dangerously high or steep. Deluge: a severe flood. Elision: the omission of a sound or syllable when speaking (as in I'm, let's, e'en). Exculpatory: tending to clear someone from blame or guilt, and is most often used in a legal context to describe evidence that proves a defendant's innocence. Atavistic: relating to or characterized by reversion to something ancient or ancestral. Parvenu: a person of obscure origin who has gained wealth, influence, or celebrity.
