As Picon Manyari notes in the article, health systems must balance adaptation and mitigation. "We need to make sure that we don't lose sight" of reducing emissions as an essential component of building resilience.

Adaptation and emissions reduction must go hand in hand. ♻️

🧭 The path forward:

Major health systems are proving that growth doesn’t have to mean a bigger climate footprint.

From NHS England & Scotland's ambitious net-zero targets to our CARES Pledge, systems aren’t just tracking progress – they’re driving transformation.

🌍 The opportunity is unprecedented:

960 U.S. hospitals have pledged to cut emissions 50% by 2030 — joining a global alliance across 100+ countries building climate-resilient, sustainable health systems.

Resilient, affordable, reliable power is the foundation of safe health care.
And that means investing in:
⚙️ Efficiency
☀️ On-site generation
🔋 Microgrids

Because when hospitals stay powered, communities stay protected.
When the lights stay on – hope does, too. 💡

They’re facing hurricanes, rising energy costs, and aging infrastructure – all while trying to keep 23 million Floridians safe.

But this isn’t just Florida’s story.
Hospitals everywhere are stretched thin by fragile grids and growing energy demand.

When the grid fails, hospitals don’t just go dark.
Ventilators stop.
Cooling systems fail.
Meds spoil.
Operating rooms fall silent.

As Julie Moyle, RN, MSN from @practicegreenhealth.org writes in @theinvadingsea.bsky.social hospitals in Florida are on the front lines of climate and power crises. 🌪️🏥

As our Associate Director of Policy & Advocacy, Tim Cronin, notes: "This important research underscores how policy choices drive the difference... Some states are well ahead because they’ve connected climate, health, and policy; others are struggling precisely because those efforts remain siloed."
October 14, 2025 at 2:22 PM
📉 Falling behind: West Virginia, Kentucky, Louisiana.

These states face more frequent hazards but lack supportive policies for resilience and emissions reduction.

The cost of inaction compounds daily—in lives, health, and dollars.
October 14, 2025 at 2:22 PM
Policy choices matter– a lot.

🥇 Leaders: Vermont, New York, Washington.

These states connected climate + health + policy through clean energy adoption and resilience planning.

The result? Better protection for communities and healthcare infrastructure.
October 14, 2025 at 2:22 PM
The paradox: The sector dedicated to saving lives is also a major polluter. The U.S. health care sector generates a whopping 8.5% of the nation's total GHG emissions.

If we’re going to "do no harm," we have to cut this footprint.

The risk is nationwide. It’s not just coastal cities.

🌊 Nearly 15% of hospital beds in Florida are in high-hazard flood zones. 🌨️ But inland states like South Dakota face high risk from severe winter weather.

Our healthcare infrastructure is increasingly fragile.

Clinicians who understand climate impacts can:
✅ factor environment into diagnoses
✅ give actionable advice (AQI, KN95s, heat safety)
✅ advocate for protective policies
✅ push for sustainable health care

99% of people breathe air below @who.int standards. The #ClimateCrisis is already in our hospitals & clinics:
😮‍💨 more meds for asthma patients
🥵 outdoor workers w/ heat exhaustion
🏭 communities near highways w/ higher health burdens
