At the post office, mail routes are limited. New carriers have to be substitutes and fill in where needed until a route opens up (usually from a regular retiring). My post office grew enough to create a brand new route, and I was next in line to receive a route, so now I have my own route!

I can't do anything about the fact that I'm autistic, but I can absolutely do everything in my power to filter the intrusive thoughts, to analyze my actions, and to become a better person every single day.

That was a truly eye-opening moment for me, it made me realize that while there was something I couldn't control, something I was born with that made me fundamentally different, I COULD control my behavior, my words, and my actions. I really had to reflect, and I've been trying to improve ever since

A few years later, I was playing an MMO, and someone I had become friends with called me out for my behavior, and I fell back on my familiar and oh-so-convenient excuse, and she simply didn't take it. She threw it back in my face and told me to take responsibility for myself.
