I've enjoyed Mysery Quest a lot! No idea where it sits on the CoC podcast quality scale though

Yeah it's very meta.

While spells have the Weave, Mystra, etc

Abilities just exist because you are awesome, but that's it.

Feels underbaked, I prefer it when there's more to it

Does it also mean a commoner could learn Action Surge?

Gee I don't know might as well play a game where the characters are parasites traversing a sea of living flesh killing other parasites and infecting the landscape.

That would surely solve your issue!!

Yeah for me Stealth needs more nuance

Degrees of failure as well as a DEX Save should be minimum, as well as a level of escalation.

I always try to add a smell or sound or touch to every description when possible.

I mean old school D&D and some other games did have level loss

not saying it's for everyone but it was a well tried and tested mechanic
November 11, 2025 at 1:45 PM
Ooo why not just that as a game, where you don't need to get XP just to level up, but to retain your power.

If you don't use it you lose it after all.

We're doing that at a narrative leveL which is why our player characters have a forward drive beyond goals, but it is also interesting for GODS

I mean man over world maps looked pretty rough throughout history so, if anything, super realistic and accurate maps are anachronistic

Bring back the really rough looking maps!

I mean no idea if it's any better than other ways, but what I've noticed is people remember "cosmetics" as a reference but they connect with purpose and character

For the characters to feel "real" and believable, the "charicature" part is really just the cherry on top of the character
November 6, 2025 at 9:42 PM
Of course we add a "silhouette" to make sure they stand out, but to me this is usually a layer, not their core.

The vurly heavy drinking cow herder woman, the old stubborn haggard lady living in the woods, or the snivelling bumbling cowardly stocky middle aged man, etc

For our game we first determine the type of character: What's their function in the context?

Are they an instigator, a source of knowledge, a victim, etc

Then we flesh them out backwards: Who are they? How did they get here?

Lastly we fill their NPC sheet: traits, knowledge, and schemes

"only 5 days a week" 🙏😭

Tbf that sounds like a dream, it's a gift in the end!
November 6, 2025 at 12:54 PM
Oooff that gives me anxiety!

Having had 2 over 6 years plus playing in one I can't imagine 6!

then again 6 years might be a bit beyond "long form" 😭

Don't burn out!!

Oh each session! That's interesting

I'll look more into it, thanks!

Everywhere

My latest was an idea for a one shot about a rite of passage centered around breaking wild horeses during their annual stampede

...it came from an advert for a gambling service that had horses facing a cliff edge.

So yeah, anywhere 😅

Yes I love this, and I even framed it to my players that this is the end goal of the game. Not survival, but as much knowledge as you can acquire before you lose it.

Which is in its own way rewarding: learning lore as an a reward is great!

I've been thinking about this more and more z especially in light of soon running Tomb of Annihilation but also other games

I'm a fan of introducing backup characters early and creating a little troupe

Only challenge is players roleplaying multiple characters at once can ne overwhelming

ironically still sounds better than actual QTEs

Nooo you are not a bad DM

And I get it, it's tough with smaller campaigns. I could do better Session Zero's also!

But you can do a Campaign Pitch before hand so everyone's onboard!

This is what Session Zero is for 😅
