I wasn't aware of that statistic, thanks. Food for thought, although in full-time work doesn't necessarily mean they are net contributors if they are low-skilled. I have to work now but cheers for the discussion.

Some immigrants contribute a lot to our economy and support themselves. I'm happy for them to be here. But a lot don't. Some immigrants cost us more than they put in and should be deported.

I don't really see what you're getting at? There's lots of evasion in construction too. None of this is really relevant to my central point, which is that I don't want to be taxed for the benefit of immigrants.

The majority of tax evasion isn't by big corporations, it's small businesses - frequently ones with foreign-born owners, like Turkish barbers and Vietnamese nail bars.

It isn't Farage who has been taking my cookies and giving them to foreigners, it's people like Starmer, Sunak and Johnson.
November 18, 2024 at 8:31 AM
I don't think you've understood the metaphor. You do realise the cookies represent money, right? I actually can spend all of my modest salary myself, and I want British workers to be well off and not over-burdened by tax.

The thing is though, the foreigner does want my cookie. And pro-immigration politicians keep taking my cookies away to give them to foreigners.

Yes! It also motivates you to explore, so you end up finding all sorts of interesting places and getting a really good mental map of the city.

Lovely, I'm inspired by these. Over the past year I've lost my photographic mojo a bit - last year I was doing a lot of nature photography and coastal/countryside landscapes, then I moved to a city and struggled to find things to shoot. I might try taking some close up, still life photos like yours.

Past behaviour is the best predictor of future behaviour!

Probation officers have their own biases, which a data-driven algorithm might help to balance. And they are sometimes too compassionate - there are plenty of cases where criminals are released and commit serious crimes that should have been foreseen.
November 16, 2024 at 10:02 AM
I don't see the problem - what's wrong with trying to predict whether a prisoner is likely to reoffend if they are released? Seems like a normal thing for a parole service to do. If done well it could save lives and help the government to put the right support in place for people leaving prison.

Hypothetically, if UK immigration went up to 2 million a year, or 5 million, or 10 million, would that be too many people?
November 16, 2024 at 8:36 AM
We both want pensions and healthcare. You think unlimited immigration will safeguard these, I think it will destroy them.

I think you're overlooking important human needs too - there are limits to our altruism, and we rightly prioritise the safety and opportunity of family, friends and country.
November 16, 2024 at 8:09 AM
Some immigrants are beneficial to the economy and the welfare state, but many cost the UK more than they contribute in tax. As for the global decline in birth rates, nobody has a solution to that but I don't think increasing pressure on housing or letting in people who are past working age helps.

Thanks for replying. My concerns are things like respecting democratic votes for lower migration, maintaining social cohesion, and spending taxpayer's money on British people instead of foreigners. I want lower numbers overall, both legal and illegal. Do you think there is a way to achieve this?
November 16, 2024 at 7:22 AM
I'm finding it difficult to understand your point of view. It seems like you're saying any attempt to halt or slow immigration is futile, the British public don't have a choice and just have to accept an unlimited number of migrants. That seems rather extreme, perhaps I'm misunderstanding you?

Thanks! This place desperately needs some diversity of viewpoints.

Sorry but this is embarrassingly cringe. They aren't scaring anyone, it's just laughable. I mean I like a bit of morris dancing from time to time, but the parliament isn't the place for it.

TBH I view people who failed to bring ID in much the same way as people who failed to register in time for the election, or people who showed up at the wrong polling station. We have processes to make our voting system unimpeachable. If you can't abide by them, you don't get to vote. Fine by me.
