Fighting discrimination and the distrust that stems from it is a constant battle. From December 2021 4 charities teamed up with NHSBT to change rules around black donation. Because of this, donors are now no longer asked if their partner has ever had sex in areas where HIV is endemic. bit.ly/3ZiReSt

The government also has a broken trust with Black communities, the Windrush scandal which affected Caribbean immigrants from the 1940-70’s. These people were falsely named illegal immigrants and lost access to home and banking. They were also detained, and some have been deported bit.ly/3YWUzW6

People from Black ethnic backgrounds had less trust in NHS NHSBT and had greater conditional distrust than white people. This was also the same for those from mixed-ethnic backgrounds. It also showed that blood donors had a greater level of trust in NHS and NHSBT compared to non-donors.

For the study 981 donors and non-donors from ethnic monitories and white populations were selected. They were then all asked a series of questions around trust relating to healthcare, public services and the general public. They were also asked questions about Brexit and the Windrush Scandal.

Why not give other blood to these patients? If we don’t match the correct Rh group to the patient, this can cause alloantibodies which can make further blood transfusion more problematic. As these patients need transfusions every 8 weeks this can make their treatment very complicated or even deadly.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited condition that causes Red blood Cells to be misshapen. It is most common within African and Caribbean ethnicities. It is a lifelong condition that can cause anaemia and widespread pain. It can only be managed with regular blood transfusions. bit.ly/3Z6jV3Z

Ro antigen blood is the best compatibility for patients with sickle cell anaemia as it least likely to create an reaction. This antigen is more common in Black people, 52%, than white, 2%. Demand for Ro grows by 10-15% each year but only 2% of blood donors in England have Ro. bit.ly/4hYjEIR
The Ro subtype explained
The Ro subtype is simply blood with a certain combination of genes. What makes donors with the Ro subtype special, is the fact that only 2% of our donors have it.

Most people have heard of the ABO blood grouping system which determines if you belong to A, B, O or AB. There is another type of blood group system which is the Rh group. This includes the Ro antigen, people with Ro blood type have the gene combination of Dccee and will have a positive blood group
