We're supposed to get our first freeze tonight so I am prepping my garden like it's Fall 28 in Stardew Valley

anyway, behold my Mighty Ginger Harvest lol

(hopefully I'll do better next year! I was really late getting it in the ground - it really needs another 2 months to mature)

[hospitals, food]

probably says something about me that I'm happy the ER didn't have to admit me for emergency gallbladder surgery because *checks notes* I needed to cook my beautiful spinach from the farm share before it went bad

I recently learned that this book exists and I thought, ah, maybe *this* is what all the vegan reply guys are reading

(Because "winning" arguments is obviously the best way to persuade people, amirite)

companion planting win:

I was starting to wonder if my beet seeds were mislabeled Swiss chard

months and months of no beets

I finally shoved some collards in near them, which sucked up a bunch of nitrogen...

My beet plants finally put energy into making roots! I'm so excited omg

In less frustrating knitting news

I am blocking this cardigan that I have been knitting for *months*

still gotta add buttons but AFAIK all one million ends have been woven in

Tried a new-to-me method of keeping greens fresh in the fridge for longer, and I am a FAN

1. wrap base of greens in damp paper towel
2. put in vase, mason jar, etc
3. cover loosely with a plastic bag to create a mini greenhouse
4. refrigerate

[Food, lack of appetite]

my immune system and meds are doing a sneaky combo attack on my appetite and whatnot

so I'm busting out one of my secret weapons from the deep freezer, which is homemade tempeh

(I make a giant batch once or twice a summer and save it for this kinda situation)

yes moving away from fossil fuels is good, but you don't have to write headlines like you're Cecil Fucking Rhodes, jfc

managed to go on a short hobble. found this broken tree slowly being returned to the forest, and I think that's beautiful.

To the tune of "We built this city"

I grew these veggies
I grew these veggies on wo-orm poo

I haven't been able to hobble out to my compost pile in awhile, but I did today and I need to show off this beautiful fucking soil

I'm the weird neighbor who talks to the worms and larvae in my fancy dirt pile and tells them what a good job they're doing

Since soy protein is hopefully going to be affordable in the US this winter

Thought I'd share my latest soy based culinary creation

It's maybe not the prettiest since I didn't have energy to brown the soy lees, but it tastes like deconstructed pizza

also just: if there are words in your image

ESPECIALLY if those words are *part of the joke*

please include them in your alt text

does anyone in #NEISvoid or just bluesky generally have experience with "intersection syndrome"

I'm finding... Not very concrete info on which exercises are good/bad for it, and hoping someone here has personal experience with it

It is allegedly "rare"

Cool bugs I've seen recently

(Please forgive the orange [cursed hardware store] bucket, we got it before they became so fash)

I wanted to make another batch of zucchini bread this week, but I didn't have time

So I settled for freezing grated zucchini and daydreaming about the last one I made

I think this is one of the prettiest loaves of bread I've ever baked (even if it is slightly lopsided)

Mix of all purpose, rye, spelt, and a little fancy Bordeaux wheat from a local farm

(Plus corn meal along the bottom)

Meanwhile I'm trying to find some joy in the midst of everything

Which is why my camera roll is mostly cats and plants and crafts

And the Mandatory Cooking I need to do to manage my MCAS (which I've gotten pretty good at)

I'm back on my "reading about autonomic dysfunction and motility disorders" bullshit

and I found a graphic in this one paper that is big fucking mood

I got Lily a little cat table to make eating more accessible and she approves

She has chronic nasal congestion and so bending down to eat was causing Instant Nose Clog

Instant Nose Clog means food has no smell, and is Not Food

cons: apparently my volunteer curcibit plant is not a variety of melon

pros: it IS my favorite squash to get at Hmart so that's a win

behold, a meal I threw together with the aforementioned volunteer squash, some eggplant my mom grew, and some peppers and Thai basil I grew on purpose

the cucumber plant is beginning to move from "one million flowers" to "cucumbers in progress"

I am tentatively excited, but staying vigilant for squash vine borers

(also delighting in how excited the local native bees are about the blossoms)
