Talarico actively fights for separation of church and state. He's very outspoken about not wanting the state to mandate that the 10 commandments be posted in Texas schools, and fought tooth and nail to not allow "chaplains" to replace counselors in public schools. Also, I don't think this is a political stop — he's in seminary school, so he often preaches at churches throughout the state. Moreover, he's not saying we should be a Christian nation, he's providing examples as to how we're not, specifically in antithesis to people who tout that we are, and therefore "should" have laws based on Christian theology. I can see how it's not perfectly clear if you haven't followed his campaign/career, but he's definitely not arguing that theology should be involved in politics.
