Her bold poster celebrates our new identity and the values that unite public service workers across Wales. It will be displayed in more than 50 branch offices, our regional offices and online. Members will also be able to request a printed copy for the cost of postage only.

That organising led to a national agreement that re-banded thousands of workers, secured back pay and delivered a recognition payment for the clinical duties they had been doing for years.

When their concerns were ignored, colleagues came together. They held meetings, completed surveys and took part in ballots until their collective voice could not be dismissed.

The report authors from the Labour Research Department set out the evidence in detail. From widespread grade mismatch and unpaid responsibilities to the urgent need for a dedicated Wales School Support Staff Negotiating Body to deliver fair pay, clear progression and national consistency.

We also heard from the Cabinet Secretary for Education, who spoke about her commitment to tackling this social justice issue and ensuring the contribution of school support staff is properly recognised.

We heard powerful testimony from UNISON members about their lives in schools. They spoke about overwhelming workloads, low pay and the reality of being pushed into in-work poverty despite their essential role supporting children’s education.

The findings make a strong case for establishing a Wales School Support Staff Negotiating Body to end the postcode lottery in pay, address long-standing problems and ensure job roles reflect the work staff actually do.

Yasmin is a Welsh illustrator from South Wales whose work is inspired by stories of solidarity such as the partnership between miners in Dulais and the LGBTQ+ community during the 1984 to 1985 strike.
