Email is pretty centralized too (who doesn’t use Gmail?) but at least it is sufficiently federated. Social is different in the sense that any chain of interactions is stateful, unlike email, which only defines a communication protocol.

Platforms originally designed to be protocols can’t be profitable. Twitter has been suffering financially for many years now at least since 2016

- Twitter should have been a protocol, not a platform. @ and # signifies protocol-level consensus on how social interactivity should work, just like how email defined @domains.com.

I don’t think a lot of people realize Twitter is the first platform to have ever invented mentions with @ and hashtags with #

That’s why Tweets were so unique: they were the original social network that defines how humans interact on mobile today, right now
