The Centre for Ecology and Conservation uses research and education to understand ecology, evolution and solutions to the global biodiversity crisis.
For International Basking Shark day, let's take a look at another Important Shark and Ray Area designation!

Researchers at the University of Exeter have contributed to the designation of the North East Atlantic ISRA - a migratory corridor from Norway to the Iberian Peninsula 🦈

Falling vulture numbers in the Americas could have serious implications for public health and ecosystems, new research has found.
A first-of-its-kind study in Costa Rica revealed that pig carcasses take twice as long to decompose if vultures are not present to provide their rapid recycling services.

A wonderful first week with visiting marine biology students from the University of Khorfakkan!

We've explored the local area, learnt about marine research conducted at the UoE Centre for Ecology and Conservation and experienced both lab and field work.

Spotted in the critically endangered southern resident killer whale population, the whales were seen biting off pieces of kelp and rubbing them between their bodies — likely to strengthen social bonds, reduce stress, and maintain skin health.

Killer whales are using kelp as tools — not just for play, but to massage each other!

This newly discovered behaviour, called allokelping, is the first evidence of tool-making in marine mammals.

Drone footage revealed it’s not rare — it’s widespread and deeply social.
