i’m rereading #iafuwwanam with the context of the reveal from #ScreamRain and…it fits 😭 it makes the conversation between him and Vaggie about the night of Masquerade, & how Vaggie convinced Charlie to go to the studio that shift, hurt even more.

“You’re officially the most improved person in all of Hell, Angel.” Well if that thought doesn’t just churn his fucking stomach. Vaggie insists on her point. “Even if we get other residents you’ll have been here longer - they’ll see you as someone who shows them that progress is possible, that progress has already been made. If you can do it, so can they!” He can tell her tone is encouraging, but something about the concept makes the blood rush in his ears and it’s hard to hear her through the horror the thought of him being a good example fills him with. “Addict trash like me doesn’t change,” comes unbidden through his lips, his voice scratching through his throat. “That’s - no, you’ve already changed,” Vaggie says, brow pinched in frustrated confusion. “A month isn’t real change,” Angel snaps, clenching his fists. “Six months isn’t real change. Three years,” he spits at her, making her eye narrow, “isn’t real change.” Vaggie’s lips thin. “You don’t mean that.” The desire to physically lash out washes through him again and he clenches his fists, tensing his arms to resist. “You know me so fucking well, huh?” “I know me,” Vaggie says with a shake of her head. “And I know what I’ve seen from you. I know I can change because I’ve watched you change. I know I put distance between me and the people I care about, I know I try to influence Charlie and others to help people instead of doing it directly so that I don’t feel responsible if I fail! That’s why I asked Husk to go after you when I was worried about you a few months ago, that’s why I encouraged Charlie to go to your work and advocate for you to your boss—” Angel’s understanding of Charlie, of that night, breaks apart. “That was you?” he interrupts, voice cracking. Vaggie closes her mouth, opens it, closes it again, guilt painting over her face. “She didn’t tell you?” “You know she blames herself for shit that’s not her fault!” Heart pumping rapidly, Angel glares at Vaggie, stepping back to take her out of his reach in case he really does strike out at her. “Tell me what happened - how’d you convince her to go to the studio?” “I - I might not remember the exact words,” Vaggie says, her fingers flexing over and over, eye flitting away from Angel before meeting his gaze again. “Before you left you told her that unless she fixed your boss that there wasn’t anything to be done, and she - you didn’t see it,” she tries to justify. “She was so sad—” “Charlie can handle being sad,” Angel says through his clenched jaw. “She’s grown.” “…yeah,” Vaggie has to agree, reluctant as she is to do so. “I figured - he’s just a Sinner. An Overlord, but a Sinner, and he runs a business, he has partners. He’s not like Alastor, who tears people apart on a whim and literally can’t collaborate to save his own life, so I figured your boss might be more influenced by reason and, uh, authoritative intimidation.” Angel laughs, the sound full of hysteria. “Fuck. Fuck!” “She was upset with herself for failing you, so I suggested she go talk to him, throw her weight around a little bit,” Vaggie says, rushing to get through her explanation. “Oh, is that all?” Angel says, sarcastic. Vaggie hesitates, then shakes her head, admitting, “She thought that would be mean, and I reframed it as aggressive kindness.” Yup, that would fucking do it. Pink threatens the edges of Angel’s vision again. “Val coulda hurt her! Was going to hurt her! I can’t - how many times are you going to fuck her over!” Defensive, Vaggie protests, “Whoa—” “Tell me it wouldn’t have been your fault if Val had hurt her,” Angel challenges, glaring at her. “Tell me it wouldn’t have been our fault - you for sending her there and me for have been our fault - you for sending her there and me for failing to protect her.” “She’s stronger than she seems,” Vaggie says, but he can see the doubt in her eyes. “You have no idea,” he says, voice low and menacing, “the shit he’s capable of. You think Alastor’s bad? You think I’m bad?” “Both you and Alastor treat her with more respect than you treat anyone else - she’s a royal!” “She’s a TARGET!” Angel shouts at her. “Me and Alastor like her, but you think anyone else out there gives a single flying shit about her? I know you love her, I do too, but you can’t - ya gotta stop talking her outta listening to her gut! You put her in danger doing that! What if I had failed to protect her, huh?! You think I would be able to live with myself if he properly got his hands on her?!” “But she is fine!” Vaggie says, trying to comfort him. “She’s fine, it scared her and she cried and she had a hard time letting go of how mad she was at herself for wronging you, but she’s alright! He didn’t hurt her - you didn’t fail!” “Yeah, and you have no fucking idea what it cost.” Memories from that shift swim in his mind, emotions more than visuals - the helplessness, the self hatred, the fear. Angel has always been able to handle what Val throws at him. Always has been, always will be. He can hide in his mind when he needs to. But that night Val had made dissociating, disappearing, impossible. Painting visions in Angel’s head of— Let’s just say last month wasn’t the first time Val’s brought up the other hotel residents in the midst of putting Angel through his paces. Val’s plans for Charlie if Val caught Angel trying to get out of work again. Feasible, plausible methods to bait her, manipulate her - trap her— —talking Angel’s ear off the whole night in explicit, graphic, terrifyingly thorough detail of what he’d do, forcing Angel terrifyingly thorough detail of what he’d do, forcing Angel to watch and making it clear it would be Angel’s fault— It had inspired more shame and terror than Angel ever remembers feeling. A difficult-but-manageable work shift, made unbearable; substances and Val’s smoke couldn’t touch the vigilance that Charlie’s visit had inspired in Angel, forcing him to experience with heightened senses the most difficult kinks he has to do for work for the first time in - ever. Forced to connect to his body, his empathy weaponized against him, until he found himself out on his balcony at the studio actively planning out the first few steps of hunting down angelic steel to end his afterlife also for the first time in ever; compared to all the rest of the times he’d wished for death, absent-mindedly and impulsive, it had been a terrifying shift. That night had been the only time his thoughts of permanently taking his own life possessed that much clarity. It’s why that first shift back with Val after their confrontation at Consent that Angel had guided the fantasies Val had walked him through that first night after Consent. If he had left Val to his own imagination, Angel doesn’t want to hear what violations he’d come up with for Husk, for Pentious, for Alastor. Angel forgave Charlie - she’d genuinely wanted to help him, and she has been a lot better about respecting his boundaries since then. But Vaggie - she’d done it just because she can’t fucking cope with her girlfriend experiencing a painful emotion. It was the same reason she’d given into her girlfriend’s expectation to go to Heaven; one of the many reasons Vaggie had lied to Charlie - and the rest of them - about her past as a former exorcist. “Angel?” He scrambles back on his hands. When had he sat on the ground? His hands sting from scraping against the dirt. Her voice, too close— When his vision finally connects to the present, he sees Vaggie squatting, her face right in front of where his had just been.

Husk eventually joins him on the ground a few feet down from Angel, feathers softly rustling, and he sighs. Angel braces for more advice, but Husk subverts his expectations. “I was an Overlord once, you know.” Angel lifts his head to look at him, surprised. What? What? Giving him an empty smile, Husk looks away. “Yeah, and…uh.” He clearly ain’t all that comfortable sharing it, and Angel watches closely, wanting to know what he can glean of what Husk thinks of himself for whatever he’s about to share. “It was nice to have that power. But when you're dealing in souls, while also being a gambler? The stakes are pretty high. And losing a few hands can be more than a…little dangerous.” Shit. At least with Angel’s soul in Valentino’s hands, he’s stuck there. He can’t imagine having a soul contract in a Hell where it could be traded like poker chips, all because he originally sold his soul to some fucker with a gambling addiction - only to have his contract bet and lost to a master Angel never would have signed onto. Angel suppresses a shudder. To a master like Alastor.
