Despite progress, urgent funding is needed. Without it, returns and reintegration could stall—leaving thousands of refugees stranded and dependent on aid.

Sustainable reintegration needs long-term support.

Peace and cooperation frameworks are helping.

In 2025, UNHCR and the governments of Chad and Nigeria signed a new agreement to support the voluntary return of Nigerian refugees. Similar efforts are underway in Niger.

UNHCR surveys show strong intentions to return home—especially among 80,000 Central African refugees in Cameroon and Chad.

Up to 60,000 returns are planned in 2026 as part of a regional plan.

Voluntary return is one of the most meaningful ways to resolve displacement. But it must be safe and sustainable.

Refugees need access to land, documents, security and basic services to rebuild their lives.

With communications disrupted, insecurity is blocking life-saving aid to civilians still in El Fasher.

Elsewhere in Sudan, including North Kordofan, survivors report similar abuses after recent town takeovers, and there are fears another major town could be besieged.

Further displacement is reported across North Darfur, with more expected, including across the border to Chad.

We are acutely concerned by reports of widespread sexual violence and executions.

We urge all parties to stop attacks on civilians and guarantee safe passage.
