About Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible (1994)
Self-Hate, Transitioning, and Manic Street Preachers A short essay on Manic Street Preachers’ 1994 album, The Holy Bible by Una Eterna Somewhat of a hot take : Every now and then people come up and talk about the possibility of Kurt Cobain being a closeted trans woman but nobody talks about Richey Edwards from Manic Street Preachers, who lowkey gives off the vibe of a closeted trans woman refusing to transition from self hatred. The Holy Bible is Manic Street Preachers' third studio album, and one of their most acclaimed, and for good reason, many praise the song writing in this album, which leans towards a more radical edge, a large chunk of it uses grotesque imagery to express Richey's own views. Among them is the obvious things such as abolishing the capitalist system, misanthropy, war and violence, etc. 30 years after the disappearance of Richey Edwards, the themes of this album still remains as relevant as ever. One thing that stands out to me is the endless amount of references/nods to feminist figures and how the songs echo the belief. A particular inspiration is Valerie Solanas, who was quoted in one song in the band's album Generation Terrorist. but notably for this album, the song "Of Walking Abortion" echoes the sentiment from the SCUM Manifesto (the title itself directly quotes the manifesto). Generally I agree with parts of the SCUM manifesto but to me it smells very TERF-y (a man's desire to be a woman is acknowledged but the writing avoid tackling the subject of being a transgender at all. instesd it used the term "transvestite"). This might have influenced Richey Edwards to an extent. Richey's writings consists of endless barrages of self-hatred and he way I see it, Richey feels complicit, to an extent. Richey's writings speak to me in such a way, as someone who would rather be a woman, but for years my endless barrage of self-hatred makes me feel disgusted of the idea of transitioning at all and I could never see myself as a woman; aligning with the beliefs in the manifesto down to the idea that a man desiring to be a woman is one of the main drives to destruction that is the patriarchy. While I don't necessarily think the album is explicitly queer in any way however, it talks about a lot of things that normally align with the beliefs and experiences of transgender people. The assumption that Richey Edwards might be queer is not completely "out there" either, the band has dealt with themes of queerness several times, one notable example being the "All Rock and Roll is Homosexual" T-Shirt they put out as merchandise. Aside from the obvious self hatred which is constantly present, the album also talks about things like body dysmorphia in “4st 7lb” which is yet another common concern of trans women, though the song itself is more specific to anorexia, I believe many parts of the songwriting relate to the experience of how transgender people frequently have a skewed view of themselves. I often find myself singing “I wanna be so skinny, that I rot from view!” and wishing for my fat to be gone from my belly, despite the fact that I weigh just over 40kg at 20 years old. Another theme is the oppression of minority, like in the song "Faster" for example, sure the album never explicitly mentions queer people but for example on the song "Of Walking Abortion" (which talks about degradation of society and how the government is at fault) it mentions groups of people ("junkies, winos, whores") who are usually viewed negatively by default in society and are the easy "punching bags" for shifting blame, etc. Now let's look at today's latest moral panic with the United States' newest step into erradicating transgenders. See my point here? The reference to sex workers ("whores") is also something of note because the first song in the album "Yes" is written from the perspective of a sex worker, widely believed to be written as an allegory on how Richey feels like they're constantly pushed to "sell" themselves to society. But for me it once again reflects the transgender experience, with how the public perceives trans women and with the fact that many of us perform sex work to survive. Well, I might be reading too much into this. But for me, this album is an essential reflection of the transgender experience, despite not being branded as a "queer" album.
