FINALLY, after 2 solid weeks of fighting with it, I took it back to Best Buy (after scrubbing my data off it) and they gladly swapped it out. It was a Crucial drive, and I got a LaCie instead. Plugged it in and was back into full working order in just 2 hours. Programs installed and everything.

Finally, I managed to strip everything back and get everything restored properly. Suddenly I had 450GB free. On a 1TB drive. Nearly half was taken up by garbage and hidden things. But after an hour of use or on a transfer larger than 10GB the external drive would crash back to the internal drive.

I tried loading it all onto an external drive, but the only ones I have are old HDDs that are extremely slow. And the one I picked was actively dying (it was making clicking sounds). So I got an SSD and even that was taking forever. And would fail after 3 hours of restoring the backup.

Then in a previous attempt to fix my computer issues, a few years ago, I tried using iCloud backups. But that kept failing. And in doing so it left huge folders stashed on my hard drive. But the real issues started when it said I had 20GB free but my system flat out wouldn't start saying full drive.
