I used to work with another attorney who would drink six glasses of wine at lunch and return to his desk as if nothing had happened. I still marvel at the thought.

More broadly, Reagan’s penchant for making up anecdotes out of whole cloth feels like it might have helped set the table for now.

Hey, I bet there are lots of evangelical denominations represented there!

Or the Democratic flack who said people on tv needed to “watch what they say.” Wait, that was Ari Fleischer?????!!!!

I think Atwater was the inspiration for this great Drive By Truckers song.

Impressive overall, but AI still has a learning curve if it cast a Catholic priest as the good guy in a Chick tract.

Between Dubya, Trump and her, the Green Party has a lot of atoning to do.

Closely held car dealerships are definitely a key node of SEC recrootin hijinks, but the no-show jobs generally go to indolent relatives rather than the players themselves.

Trent Lott has to be annoyed that he went down for saying Strom Thurmond should have won the 1948 election.

I’m amazed the David Bowie oeuvre hasn’t come in for more right-wing religious scrutiny.

I have some quibbles with the Mississippi Delta (43)—it probably shouldn’t include the Memphis suburbs but probably should extend farther east between Highway 61 and I-55. Great map overall, though.

Yeah, no one should get their hopes up about Mississippi, but he will be an intelligent and articulate advocate for non-Republican views. I know moral victories don’t count, but that’s all too rare down here.

I’m a Wicker constituent. A few months ago, I wrote him to express disgust about the J6 pardons. I got a response about DOGE. He’s the definition of an unaccomplished apparatchik.

I read that book in a History of the New South class in 1999 and still think about it. Great read.

I don’t necessarily oppose running D candidates who are not full-fledged liberals on abortion. But the notion that Democrats haven’t already been doing that for years in red states is fanciful.

I’ve got some issues with Ezra. I think he’s pretty unrealistic about what the right wing is. But he gets credit from me for going out on a limb against renominating Biden months before the June debate. He seems like a good-faith liberal who just has some blind spots.

I'm from Mississippi but spent my 20s and early 30s elsewhere. The rest of the country was never as different from the South as it liked to imagine.

That said, the patterns of segregation here are arguably more "Northern" than they were 60 years ago.

I live in Mississippi (and for some reason am still on). I think the last 10 years or so have shown that it’s a lot more like the rest of the country than the latter would like to imagine.

Mitch McConnell is a good example. The only chance that people of his general philosophy (awful as it is) would control the Republican Party again was voting to convict Trump in February 2021.
