Claudette Colvin a 15 yr.old Black girl from Montgomery, Ala. refused to give up her seat to a white passenger nine months before Rosa Parks. She did not become the face of the movement because leaders felt her circumstances (pregnant out of wedlock) would not make her a figure to rally behind.

Before Madam C.J. Walker, there was Annie Turnbo Malone, a pioneering entrepreneur in the early 1900s who built a successful hair care empire. Though Walker later became more famous, Malone was one of the wealthiest Black women of her time and laid the foundation for the Black hair care industry.

In 1739, The Stono Rebellion was the largest slave uprising in colonial America. A group of enslaved Africans from South Carolina marched toward Florida. They burned plantations & fought colonial militia. The rebellion was ultimately suppressed but influenced more resistance.

In 1923, Garrett Morgan invented the three-position traffic signal. His design became the foundation for modern traffic lights and was eventually patented and purchased by General Electric. Morgan was also the inventor of an early version of the gas mask.

During World War II, the 555th Parachute Battalion was an all-Black unit that was deployed to fight wildfires in the U.S. Japanese attacks were causing forest fires in the Pacific NW. The 555th became the first military smokejumpers and helped pave the way for the integration of the U.S. military.

Madam C.J. Walker, built an empire focused on Black women’s hair care. She advocated for civil rights and philanthropy. She was involved in the anti lynching movement, funded scholarships for women at Tuskegee Institute, and donated to the NAACP. She was also a supporter of the Harlem Renaissance.

Susie King Taylor the first and only Black woman to publish a memoir about her experiences in the Civil war. She was a nurse for the 1st South Carolina Volunteer Infantry. Her memoir, Reminiscences of My Life in Camp, provides a firsthand account of Black women’s contributions during the Civil War.

In 1892, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams performed one of the world’s first successful open-heart surgeries without modern anesthesia or antibiotics. Williams founded the first Black owned and operated hospital in America. His contributions helped pave the way for modern cardiac procedures.
