If RAM makers feel the prices are too low, they halt production until prices rise. If prices heat up too much, they start making more RAM.

This means that at any given time, there was a limited and tightly controlled amount of RAM chips available for any and all computer applications.

Dad used to get Boot/MaximumPC mag, which always had a demo disk with 6+ decent length demos on it.
I think that's how i got the Fallout Demo (still the best demo I've ever played) and a few great early FPSs

Old magazines could be so cheap because they generally wanted to get in front of as many people as possible so they could charge a *lot* of money for dozens of glossy ads in each issue. Most online journalism subscriptions today are ad free, which is good but changes the economics substantially.
