Found vintage photograph, washed-out image of a deer in the foreground, trees in the background. The words "BRIGHT OBJECT" are stamped over the image. Back of found photograph, typewriter text reading: A stolen aloneness, a tiny shard of light below the shelves buried behind dust and debris. Thinking it a bright object, reach in only to find an untouchable glow. Leaves burned black by life, time, rot, somehow centered on a stepping stone mostly overgrown by green grass. Pick them up, brittle, wonder what hands placed them there. I will be alright, or so says a song, the stinging sound of artifice around an honesty it- self.

Things I've been writing on and mailing away. Short story? prose poem? (I never know what to call this stuff) on found photograph.

An index card lying on the forest floor. Typewritten on the card is text reading: "Not porcelain but a piece of shell, pearl white against brown leaves. Not glass treasure but tiny plastic vodka trash, caked with dirt, filled with dirt, filled with moss. Toss it back towards the path, hope to remember it later. A bluejay calls alarm. Calls alarm again. Quiets. Frame of an old metal can, a rusted out ribcage gathering leaves. This place, beautiful though it is, seems to weep refuse."

Observations on Public Land, Parcel 61-12. 17 MAR 2025
An index card lying on the forest floor. Typewritten on the card, the text: "Furrows and div ets mar the topsoil, as though something came through digging. Hunting. Scraping. Searching. For some reason, I gather bits of brick and stack them in a tiny wall around an older pine. Then stand and watch the circles blooming on the water. Brown, tan, deep clay. A hole below a knot in a twin tree trunk, a dark door to somewhere. The circles overlap, dissolve, emerge anew."

Porch Palimpsest project continues slowly. Here is 26 Nov 2024. Typewritten, scanned, xylene transferred to a panel (the same panel, again and again), 16" x 16".
A white panel is placed on gravel and ice. It has typewritten text that reads: "26 NOV 2024 The sun paints pink one side of the white house across the street, the shadows turning nearly green. A rainbow leans against the blue gray sky. Ash purple clouds drift behind the bare trees as geese call out from somewhere unseen. Everything glows orange, everything glows pink. Cold rain drips a dozen rhythms from dark branches."

Lately, I've been spending time on Public Land. Parcel 61-12. I've been recording my observations. Here is one from March 16.
An index card lying on the forest floor. Written in typewriter is the text "61-12 XX.XX4808, -XX.XX6830 16 MAR 2025 #1. The squirrel's body is gone. Just a lining of faint fur pressed to the dirt. I pull from the dark soil a piece of porcelain printed with fine flowers. There was a single tooth, too. I left it in the leaves, carried back a shard of bark to sit with the porcelain on the half-empty table. Near photos, notes, red tape."

I've been writing stories on old things and mailing them away. I love the print on some of these old postcards.
Message side of the postcard with typewriter text reading: Beetles cover the porch, scurrying. The line of things seems to extend long into the night. A distant machine hums deeply, moving beneath the click of the cooling engine. In time it dies, leaving the soft patter of rain and insects colliding with the light. No passing headlights illuminate the road. Mosquitos hum and dance in the hot air as it presses down from the starless gray above. As though the viscous heat and the sky itself have conspired to cast clouds like closing curtains, shrouding any window of relief from the weight of this ponderous summer night. I will go inside, but not just yet. Image side of the postcard, vintage print depicting the crater at Lassen Peak.
