UMCOR’s long-standing relationships in the Caribbean, including recent disaster-response trainings in June 2023 and March 2025, ensure that additional aid reaches those in need quickly and effectively.

UMCOR and its regional partners are conducting needs assessments and preparing for a coordination meeting in Cap-Haitien, Haiti, on November 18–21, to plan the next phase of relief and recovery.

Further coordination is underway with the Iglesia Metodista En Cuba. These grants are in addition to those issued last week to Methodist partners in Jamaica and Haiti.

We will remain in communication with the MCCA and other partners in the region as relief efforts continue. We encourage you to continue to pray for those impacted and faithfully support relief and recovery efforts, as food insecurity and the risk of water-borne illnesses will increase.

As the needs of those impacted by Hurricane Melissa become clear over the coming days, UMCOR is prepared to support the response efforts of our Methodist partners in Jamaica and the Caribbean.

Significant flooding and damage from Melissa have already occurred in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, with additional impacts expected in both countries and in Cuba. We pray especially for Haiti, as Melissa’s impact will worsen the hunger crisis experienced by more than half of the country.

Melissa is a category 5 storm and is expected to have a catastrophic impact on Jamaica, with up to 30 inches of rain and a 13-foot storm surge predicted.

As we pray, we are also coordinating with the disaster response team of the Alaska Annual Conference as they communicate with the impacted villages and respond to their needs.
