I would add to that: the need to be part of a 'special group'. When humans fund groups that make them feel 'special', they will reshape themselves rather than risk being expelled.

I had the same concerns. How close does the material need to be in order for time dilation to be 'averaged out'? Also, just how much of a factor difference would there be? It sounds like a complex system.
