I salted my threshold and the area just outside my door. I also placed cloves on and above my door frame. Don't know if it will help, but makes me feel better.

Same M.O. There's a knock. No other noise. No one answers when asked who's there. Then open the door (we don't have peep holes), and no one's there.
And it can happen at anytime, but it's most often at night. My neighbor's door was knocked on last night at 4 in the morning.
