So it is that Meridian finds the girl, his leathers torn and his scythe drenched in black blood. But she doesn’t notice him, not at first. She hardly seems aware of anything, in fact. A hyur of no more than sixteen summers, wearing a simple cornflower blue sundress and a cherry-red ribbon in her black hair. She’s clutching something protectively in her arms as she picks her way through the thick underbrush, hopping over sticks and dancing around rain puddles with a practiced step. She must be heading to the Druthers, too. He’s about to take another path, leave her be, when he catches a subtle gathering of shadows in the corner of his perception, slithering careful and predatory over the crunch of fallen leaves. The untrained eye might think it a trick of the whispering canopy, its trees a living cage that often shifts unnaturally. But this is a different, deeper darkness. Meridian pauses. He should keep moving. Leave the girl to her fate. But the shadows are thickening, coalescing. Even the girl understands, on a primal level, that something with claws now reaches for her. She picks up the hem of her dress, her other arm tightening around her chest, and starts to hurry. An eerie chorus rings through the trees: the howling of wolves, half a dozen, appearing as though from the void itself. Surrounding her.
