I guess an inarticulate attempt at asking about how they dealt with it

Why don't we think Garcetti applies? Even granting the existence of an academic freedom exception, such an exception would surely not apply so far as a syllabus. Such documents serve neither to advance scholarship nor to actually teach the course material.

And in fairness, what I had in mind are sources written by and for non-slaves, particularly literary texts (Satyricon, Casina) whose exact import is obviously contestable as a source for social relations. Still, from my layperson's perspective, a difficult source should still count as a source, no?

No pillars, but plenty of ancient literary sources that absolutely discuss slaves.

Would a Roman have understood a fascinum as being similar/the same thing as a sopio?

And obviously wrong, too, if youblook at how strained the reasoning in Dred Scott is.

That or the statement is an attempt to valorize fanfiction by tying it to antique literary practices. But if you like fanfiction, maybe just say so?

But also calling it "fanfic" imposes a modern criterion--that good literature must have an original lot--on a premodern literature, which often derived its plots by reworking myths. So the statement "Vergil wrote fanfic" substantially misses the point

Good faith tangential question:
I understood that, w/r/t replicability, it was easier to get funding for "new research" than trying to replicate experimental results. Did I just imagine that? Ws that a real concern?

Political violence is bad because civil conflict is absolutely fucking terrible for everyone. It empowers the worst people within a society and feeds into endless cycles of escalating violence that get harder and harder to stop.
