Funnily enough MK1 added an 'alternate control scheme' option which adds diagonals to inputs, though I'm not sure how many people actually use it
It doesn't seem to bring you any advantages (i.e extra damage) beyond being more friendly for players of normal fighting games

A fireball can just be Down Forward and a DP can be Forward Down; using single button specials doesn't actually prepare players for motion inputs
It doesn't help that fighting games with single input specials are still very complex & complicated to their core (see 2XKO)
