Per the GFA, NI *can’t* be excluded from the Union without an affirmative vote in NI. That is presumably one of the constraints that Farage hopes to escape by renegotiating the GFA.

We’re talking about nationalism, and whether it’s fundamentally right-wing. It isn’t, as any survey of nationalism in action will show, Ireland being a case in point.

Anyone born in NI is a British citizen (regardless of whether they ever apply for a UK passport) unless they affirmatively renounce British citizenship.

If the option facing the UK is (a) accede to EU and adopt the euro or (b) don’t accede, it will do whichever one it wants. Either way, it won’t have been “bullied”. And it won’t be a stalemate; the outcome most acceptable to both parties will have been achieved.

Even less likely that the EU will be bullied into doing something it doesn’t want to do. Question is which side will conform its wishes to that of the other - UK or EU?

Rationally, the politicians should not be asking themselves whether EU membership is as good as what UK had before, but whether it’s better than what UK has now. That’s the comparison that really matters.
