A unimaginative ugly brick of a poorly glued-together metal-clad juggernaut, a future visualized by an antisocial billionaire, rolling along taking up more than its fair share of space, filled with insecure bearded self-involved douchebags, always on the brink of catastrophic failure, malfunction, or fire and only just slightly more likely to kill innocent bystanders than its own passengers.

Naturally, I asked some folks if they could define the hellscape in question. By and large, most of them (who live quite comfortably in non-hellish neighborhoods) couldn't really define it. A few talked about high prices for gas and food. A couple mentioned the border and fentanyl, ignoring the fact that Trump had done precisely zero about those particular issues during his first term. Now, speaking as a horror writer, I have to say that when it comes to hellscapes, we as Americans should be able to do much better than that. I'm thinking something more like: Raw sewage getting pumped into drinking water supplies. The return of fatal, infectious diseases that we thought were long gone, like measles and rubella and dysentery. A booming economy suddenly taking a nose dive into negative territory, paving the way for recession or even a depression. Open conflict with our neighbors and closest allies. Foreign markets being closed off to American goods. Our financial information being handed over to a drug addict, who, like all drug addicts everywhere, will sell it. Free speech being threatened and criminalized. The rule of law and the Constitution being openly ignored. National defenses against a hostile foreign power being lowered. After a year of horrific weather-related events like the North Carolina hurricane floods, dismantling the service that helps warn people about weather-related events. Removing long-established support for veterans, the elderly, and the hungry. Standing down safeguards against pandemics, leaving us wide open to the next COVID. Now that's what I call a hellscape. Think we can do that? Oh. Wait. Crap.
