A scholar of EU law, constitutionalism, human rights & memory politics 🇳🇱
One 2025 piece that specially matters to me: a chapter on #Belarus in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war, and its laws on historical memory, framed by citing Nobel laureate Aleś Bialiatski – just released from prison (for even bleak chapters need not end without hope): papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

Yesterday I presented my research on the global rise of memory laws at a workshop inspired by the Oscar-winning film “Ainda Estou Aqui”, hosted by the Escola da Magistratura do Rio de Janeiro. Great to reconnect with colleagues & friends. Sempre uma alegria voltar ao querido Rio… ainda estou aqui. 🇧🇷

Back from Trier after presenting my hate-speech research at the ERA's (Academy of European Law) EU anti-discrimination law seminar. Always great to return to Germany’s oldest town. Grateful for the occasion to inform judges across Europe and the ERA's flawless organisation. 🇩🇪🇪🇺

📘If you’re near Huddersfield 🇬🇧, don’t miss the book launch this 30 June by Aytekin Kaan Kurtul — presenting his brilliant monograph on lèse-majesté: the offence of insulting heads of state. My endorsement is on the screenshot below.👇

Spoke (& learned tons!) on Chinese memory laws & East-Asian memory studies at a top workshop in lovely Leiden, thanks to Dr. Vincent Chang. The "Leiden Asian Studies" scholars = razor-sharp erudite minds. Hope my little “constitutional” detour to Korea & Japan didn’t send anyone to sleep! 🇨🇳 🇰🇷 🇰🇵 🇯🇵 🇹🇼

Gladly serving on the jury for Dr. Masuma Shahid’s PhD defence (online from Italy 🇮🇹 and thus, missing a rare occasion to wear a gown) at Erasmus University Rotterdam.🇳🇱 Warm congrats to Masuma & her co-supervisors, Profs. Jeroen Temperman & Ellen Hey, on a timely thesis on equal marriage right! 🎓

Touching base again with my Florentine alma mater this month as a visiting scholar at the EUI's (@eui-eu.bsky.social's) Robert Schuman Center (@eui-schuman.bsky.social). Trying to wrap up some delayed constitutional scribbles — bribe me with a gelato and I might just share a draft by the end of May.

My new open-access article on memory laws & the politics of #history in #Belarus is out in the Review of Central & East European Law: brill.com/view/journal... 📚 It explores the peculiar framing of #genocide & the authoritarian memory politics in recent Belarusian legislation. @tmcasser.bsky.social

Reconnecting with carioca colleagues is a joy – especially when we dive into memory laws at the Escola da Magistratura. 🇧🇷 If you’re in Rio this month, não fiquem tímidos – reach out. Const. law, human rights (esp. free speech), anti-discrimination, EU law & memory politics. Vamos trocar ideias 🎼

I’m back to Rio for a research mission this month & a workshop on mnemonic constitutionalism at the Escola da Magistratura on Friday-the-13th: emerj.tjrj.jus.br/evento/8582. You’re warmly invited – also for a coffee in town. Even constitutionalism needs a caffeine boost to fight jet lag! ☕🌴
