Its week 23 of the UK Butterfly Monitoring Scheme!

September is here and we're into the last month of the survey. Some summer species may no longer be on the wing, but as we're having a bumper year, keep an eye out for second (or even third) broods of some species.

UKBMS data is crucial for research. A new paper uses 45 yrs of UKBMS data to examine how extreme climate events affect butterfly populations in England. Heatwaves during hibernation or early life stages and heavy rain during later stages have -ve effects.

UK Butterfly abundance Indicators for 1976-2024 have been released, showing an 18% decline in overall butterfly abundance for the UK. Habitat specialists have fared worse, declining by over a third.

The deadline for submitting all your data for the UKBMS is the end of October - so get ahead and enter all your data to date. This gives our Coordinators and species experts time to check, validate and verify your records.

Now is a good time to trial it and make any tweaks it so it's ready for the next season. Once finalised, the route can't be changed, so testing it first is crucial. More info here: buff.ly/zQyStix

If you're off on your hols and have someone covering your transect for you, make sure they are linked to it on the UKBMS website so they can enter data and signed up to Assemble.

Keeping up to date with entering your data is really important so that we can carry out the analysis swiftly once the season ends.

Take some time to check through your data and get it all entered. There's a handy videos showing you how to do this ⬇️

Its week 17.

Keep at it! The more weeks that you can consistently record, the more valuable the data. If there are too many gaps when the transect isn't walked, we cannot use the data to produce butterfly trends.
