It's not (entirely) true that I choose the people in my books for their names. My first pick for this chapter was not Sah but rather a prominent Mayo Clinic orthopedist-and the guy to whom, I realized with a jolt, I'd lost my virgin- ity. He didn't answer my emails after the first one, though not, I'm pretty sure, because he recognized my name from back then. A friend from high school and I, townies both of us, had gone to a frat party with the aim of choosing someone cute and "getting it out of the way." Boom, done. The man spends more time inside the hips of a typical arthroplasty patient than he did in mine. We're talking about girth, not length, because girth seems the more salient dimension in terms of female sexual pleasure. The distinction seems to have escaped the authors of the journal paper "Nose Size Indicates Maximum Penile Length," who sought scientific verification of the saying "Big nose, big hose" (their phrasing). They report that nose size was "highly related to stretched penile length," or SPL. SPL was standing in for erect penile length, which the researchers were unable to ascertain, because all 126 subjects were dead. (These were men who'd been autopsied at the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medi- cine, whose institutional review board, perplexingly, approved the project.) There was no correlation between nose size and penile girth. Stewart, unsure, had asked five of his colleagues to examine the patient and weigh in. "All unhesitatingly took sides with her," he writes, "one of the gentlemen stating that any operation destined to preserve the marital relations and keep the home intact was not only justifiable but mandatory." And here we see how the anus can be used as a substitute for the male brain. Not the Dr. Pepper of soft drink renown. That is Dr. Charles Pepper. Who was in fact a doctor, but not the inventor of Dr Pepper. Dr Pepper was invented, in 1880, by a drugstore owner named Wade Morrison, who was in love with Dr. Charles Pepper's daughter. Our William Pepper, I learned from the biog- raphy William Pepper, M.D., LL.D (1843-1898), was a doctor from Philadelphia. As was his father, William Pepper, "known in the annals of medicine as the elder Pepper."

Finktober 2025 Day 21: Sickle. I have been watching Chinese renovation videos for years and everyone who buys an abandoned house in rural china has at least one of these billhook-type sickles. They use them to clear land, harvest grains, cut bamboo, split firewood, you name it.
