It is rather pleasant to be able to offer examples to refute the cheap assertions by those critics who say the best local student talent goes abroad. A n unusual but intensely in teresting job for a woman is that held by Dr. Joan Hearman, B.Sc. (W.A.), and Ph.D. (London), of Bun bury She is one of the five research officers (and the only woman on the job) for the Committee o f Scientific and In dustrial Research in New South Wales, working in the Murrum bidgee irrigation area. Dr. Hear man is concen tratine on citrus trees, trying to find a reason for their decline. Dr. Hearman did advanced work in pomology in England, and did ? some work in the pine forest area at Ludlow for the West Australian Forestries Department, before going east. She left by plane today to return to New South Wales after three weeks' holiday in Bunbury. visiting her mother, Mrs. W. E. Hearman, who is editor of the Country Women's Association magazine.
