His results indicate that outbred rescuers are better, although inbred rescuers still have positive effects on productivity. The next steps are to look at whole genome resequencing for the populations to compare genetic diversity.

Using Red Flour Beetles, George uses an experimental design to test which rescuing population is better, assessing population fitness over 10 generations.

Genetic bottlenecks and inbreeding depression is a significant threat to species and isolated populations around the world. Sometimes conservationists use genetic rescue to minimise these threats, but should they use inbred or outbred rescuers? #CEEC24

Future work will include looking at another “best practice” case study and assessing wider views on biodiversity net gain, which you can contribute to here: forms.office.com/e/8Pjkw5LjtE !

The take home is that BNG doesn’t change opinions of a project, instead it supports existing opinions: those who think the road is acceptable use it to justify the road’s biodiversity impacts, whilst those who think it's unacceptable believe it doesn't make up for what was lost. #CEEC24

Data was gathered using a questionnaire disseminated through a leaflet drop (getting ~500 responses) and sharing on social media (~100 responses). #CEEC24

To look at the acceptance of BNG, Alice is using the Norwich Western Link, a controversial road in northwest Norwich, as a case study. #CEEC24
March 7, 2024 at 11:56 AM
Previous work suggests BNG should increase acceptance, however, this has not prevented protests against multiple high-profile projects aiming to achieve BNG #CEEC24

BNG has recently become mandatory in England, requiring most developments to produce a 10% uplift in biodiversity units to get planning permission. #CEEC24

Next up is Alice Stuart's talk discussing their work on the social acceptability of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). #CEEC24

This exciting project uses a Convolutional Neural Network alongside traditional bioacoustics indices and will reconstruct past soundscapes to look at temporal changes in these metrics.

Sound is a key means through which many of us experience nature and birds are often the major contributors to natural soundscapes. Soundscapes can be linked to a range of wellbeing benefits we get from spending time in nature but are often underrepresented.

This advances understanding of genes responsible for deleterious mutations and can inform captive and wild populations management. There are also wider implications to identify overlooked signatures of bottleneck events in other species.

Jessica’s work investigates the impacts of deleterious mutations in wild and captive Cheetah populations. She has identified a number of genes with previously unreported stop codons, including some associated with male fertility.

Approximately 10,000 yrs ago Cheetahs went through a severe bottleneck event and some populations had symptoms of inbreeding depression. They are now listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN red list and face many threats throughout their range

Using a transfer experiment Liliana and colleagues compared workers from young colonies to those from old colonies. This gave them the chance to decipher the individual and social influences on ageing in bees a little further. #CEEC24
March 7, 2024 at 10:28 AM
It seems you live longer if you’re born in a young bumblebee colony. Liliana's study is trying to find out whether this is due to intrinsic differences in quality or is it the social environment that influences this.
#CEEC24
March 7, 2024 at 10:27 AM
Ageing is a puzzling field in biology and so are the social systems of eusocial insects.
Bumblebees are great to study this, as workers within the same colony show a large variety in longevity and it is not yet understood what determines an individual’s lifespan. #CEEC24

Relative to conspecifics, Praslin sooglossids also have divergent nuclear genotypes and call characters, a finding consistent with adaptation causing speciation in a novel thermal environment. Here's the paper: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

They also found that frogs on Praslin are larger in size. This combined with ancestral state estimations suggest that this population shifted its thermal niche in response to restricted opportunities for elevational dispersal. #CEEC24
March 7, 2024 at 10:10 AM
Recent work on this species by Jim and colleagues on several Seychelles islands used bioacoustics to show that frogs on Praslin are active at warmer temperatures and therefore adapted to the hotter conditions on this island. #CEEC24

Jim takes us through some frog species endemic to the Seychelles, including this incredible Seychelles frog (Sooglossus sechellensis), sadly threatened with extinction. They reach a maximum size of just 15 mm and the females carry their young around on their backs. #CEEC24
