The center advocates for research into NTDs through outreach and education. High school, undergraduate and graduate students frequently visit the center for hands-on training as well as lectures and workshops. The center also trains of scientists from low- and middle-income countries.

The team is working to find better treatments for serious infectious diseases including brain-eating amoebas (pictured), “kissing bug” disease (Chagas), sleeping sickness (African trypanosmiasis), leishmaniasis and snail fever (schistosomiasis).

Gilson’s research develops and tests computational methods to predict how strongly drug-like molecules bind to disease-related proteins—with the ultimate goal of accelerating drug discovery.
