Appointed to UCD in 1966, Dr Maurice Manning was one of the founding members of the then Department of Ethics and Politics, where he taught until his election to the Dáil in 1981, making an important contribution to the growth of political science as a discipline in Ireland.

Dr Manning was awarded a Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD), for his contributions to higher education, public service, politics and public discourse. Recognising her lifelong dedication to the Irish harp, McCrann received a Degree of Doctor of Music (DMus).
