Here's the exe summary page for my update to "Jubilee and Jubilation: An Examination of the Relationship between Public Service Loan Forgiveness and Measures of Well-Being"
Key Findings 1. Credit Scores: With a larger sample size, the average FICO score for PSLF borrowers decreased from 742 to 705, moving from the sample average from the "Very Good" to the "Good" category, which suggests they may face higher credit constraints and interest rates than previously measured. We anticipate that resumed payments will lower borrowers' credit scores, reinforcing the benefit of forgiveness on credit health. 2. Homeownership: 63% of our sample reported homeownership, ten percent below the national rate for those with Bachelors’ degrees in 2022. The Pause allowed many borrowers to save for down payments, which is unlikely to persist post-Pause. PSLF respondents reported median monthly mortgage costs of $1,653 and rent of $1,400—27% and 20% below national medians—challenging perceptions of extravagant living. 3. Financial Stress and Well-being: Financial stress decreased significantly for borrowers who achieved forgiveness, while those with 13 or more remaining payments reported elevated stress. The WOFD group exhibited financial anxiety due to uncertainty in the forgiveness process, highlighting the toll of long wait times. 4. Suicidal Ideation: Disturbingly, 19% of the sample reported suicidal thoughts, with the rate climbing to 53% among WOFD borrowers, reflecting the intense mental health strain associated with PSLF. WOFD borrowers expressed frustration over administrative delays and uncertainty, exacerbating their mental distress.

In all, our results suggest that to get the most out of the HE system we should enrol students on the courses that best match their ability.

We should focus on encouraging high attaining low SES students into high quality courses!

Poster for a film screening and teach-in about debt and debt collection - "Shame on You" is the film that will be screened on Nov. 21, 2024 at UC Irvine School of Law from 12-1pm in Law 3750. The film explores how the debt collection industry is enabled by shame and fear of the judicial system and shines a light on the hardships of the industries' victims.
