In Ken MacLeod's excellent SF novel, The Execution Channel, we find out somewhere along the line that Al Gore won that election, and... nothing much is very different as far as the war on terror goes. Remember that W's partner in crime was Tony Blair, a liberal-left leader not dissimilar to Gore...
