@phylojennatics.bsky.social research focuses on macro and micro forces that can influence species abundance in Silene. She is using herbarium specimen data to build a genus phylogeny. Jenna successfully extracted DNA from a specimen from 1892!

Using seqdata with morph, habitat & climate traits, it aims to reveal diversification, adaptation & future ranges w/implications for conservation & understanding parasitic plant evol.

Master’s student @arisaemaguy.bsky.social focuses on the Arisaema triphyllum species complex. It has been subject to numerous taxonomic revisions over the past 200 yrs. Morgan is utilizing morphometrics, on both the macro & micro scales, to help herbaria distinguish between the species.

Last weekend, Burnetta Hinterthuer was awarded our Eric & Milanne Sundell Award to recognize the impact she has on native plants in Arkansas, including being a mentor to collections manager, @jenoglesplants.bsky.social. @andrewruegsegger.bsky.social president-elect of the ANPS planned the meeting.

Thanks to the 30 who came to Smith Creek Preserve on Sat! @jenoglesplants.bsky.social & @andrewruegsegger.bsky.social led the group to Elise Falls, pointing out plants along the way. Highlights: Aplectrum hyemale & Tipularia discolor in leaf, Hamamelis vernalis & Erythronium albidum in flower.

UARK is bustling today! Volunteers @dgwalt.bsky.social @auxarcwildflowers.bsky.social @staymoreark.bsky.social and grad student @arisaemaguy.bsky.social mounted plants and worked on insect mgmt, while local artist (and recent UA grad) Riley Moore came in to draw grasses.

A few mosses we saw growing on Ozark sandstone outcrops during a recent hike. UARK has uploaded all of the nearly 3,000 preserved #bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts) in its collection to bryophyteportal.org.
