I'm no longer part of Black N Animated and I'd like to share my words of farewell with you and my many thanks to everyone who's been a part of helping this community grow. But also ...share my words since the words posted are not mine when I thought they would be
Howdy. Yes, I am no longer part of Black N Animated. I was waiting on the announcement of my departure via the org but 2 months have gone by since I submitted my words of farewell for the public. I had intended to share this myself soon, since it was taking a while but I see it’s now gone up. However, those are not my words that have been shared. Please allow me to share with you my farewell. In 2019 the podcast Black N Animated that Waymond Singleton and I founded became an organization. Way officially stepped down as a co-director back in 2021 to focus on his career and in 2022 I brought on Austin Faber to help assist me as a new co-director. In May of 2024 I went on a mental health break , stepped down as co-director after my return and became part of the advisory board. But, as of Dec.19th I've fully stepped away from the organization. It comes after a tough decision with reassessing life priorities and also unfortunate disagreements in leadership of the org. Almost 6 ½ years have flown by since BNA’s creation in 2018, from podcast to non-profit. Way and I wanted to provide hope that we as black people are here and thriving in animation. But it wasn’t just us. BNA’s community came from combining the efforts from Nilah Magruder and Lorraine Grate after the very first mixer they held for #Drawingwhileblack in 2019. It was a casual get together of black artists, and we forged ahead to do even more. I feel so privileged to have worked with everyone that’s been part of BNA, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done together. It’s been amazing having so much support and seen this org grow. At the end of May I took a 2 month mental health leave, as I was pregnant and needed some time away. Upon my return I made the decision to transition from a co-director to an advisory board member. Thus I was no longer part of the day to day. Yet, reevaluating again as I said, I made the very hard decision to fully step down. It’s bittersweet letting something go that has been part of your life for over 6 years. Despite my exit not being the way I would have liked, I’m hopeful that BNA will stay focused on the mission we started with. That mission being to empower, educate and inspire black creatives seeking careers in animation and further their career advancement. It’s emotional for me, but I’m grateful to everyone. My advocacy for black creatives in animation will continue on. That will never stop. I’m here for the movement and not just a moment. Thank you to every member of BNA that I've met over the years. Your wins, your joys, your career advancements, your comfort in community has brought me so much happiness. Whenever I hear someone say the podcast inspired them to learn more, they made a friend in discord, they found a job through our networking events, they say “ Bre, I’m thankful to you guys and BNA.
