What a verse for such a time as this:

“When the tempest passes, the wicked is no more, but the righteous is established forever.”

I wrote the latest cover story for The Atlantic. It's about the far-ranging implications of one simple statistic: Americans have never spent so much time alone, and surging solitude is warping our society.

I'm really proud of it, and I hope you read it.

I spent quite a bit of time today and yesterday redesigning classes that I’ve been teaching for years now. I had such a refreshing sabbatical last semester that I couldn’t resist the redesign. In any event, I’m looking forward to the spring semester.

Just watched Mufasa. Beyond it being a good movie, it’s a great example of the importance of intergroup relations and who is able to lead and influence certain groups.

My wife and I are starting a new tradition of making a different type of brownies every "Christmas Adam." Anyone else up starting/doing traditions on this day? www.bostonglobe.com/2024/12/22/n...
Have you heard of ‘Christmas Adam’? The day before the day before Christmas is coming. - The Boston Globe
It’s hard to define Christmas Adam, aside from the date. Unlike Christmas Eve, Christmas Adam is not part of an official Christian calendar.

This is a bad idea of leadership: "Identify a mature business, ideally one that is critical for customers. Buy it at a decent price. Cut it to the bone by reducing the workforce, eliminating less lucrative products and slashing research-and-development budgets." www.economist.com/business/202...

And this is a major issue in Higher Ed amidst the drop in white enrollment: "how to change recruitment efforts to attract more white students while also trying to rectify persistent racial inequities for a population that will soon make up the majority of students." www.chronicle.com/article/wher...

A Chronicle analysis shows their numbers are dropping faster than any other group’s.

With so much going, it’s the silence on human issues (e.g., race relations, impoverished communities) in everyday encounters that bother me most. It appears that it’s easier to look the other way or remain quiet in the presence of injustices…

I have asked Chat GPT for ‘exact’ and ‘real’ quotes about various topics and the quotes have been very good. The only problem is that they have rarely been ‘real’ quotes. Or, when I ask for the source of the quote, it tries to explain to me how the quotes could’ve been MLK- or Gandhi-like. Not good.

Just watched the new Stanford Prison Experiment documentary. It is well done and provides a much more balanced account than what has been portrayed in psychology textbooks for the last 50 years.
