It's coddling to an extent I generally think less of 'fandom' and 'fanfiction' and cannot possibly take this shit seriously. It's like macaroni art your kid brings in.

No it's not. As someone who writes fic myself I want my shit to be good. Who out there spends hours and hours writing just to say, 'if it's trash that's fine too!'

I think my issue with fanfiction is that it is both wholly a hobby without restrictions of who can come and join and not to be taken seriously, yet in the same vein it is to be as respected and loved and cherished as LotR and fic authors are on par if not better authors than published ones
