Please begin your subject line with “PITCH” (without the quotation marks) so that it gets picked up by our filtering system. Otherwise you risk your pitch not being read! We do not accept pitches written in whole or in part by AI nor do we knowingly publish essays that were compiled with AI. Regarding the actual email, keep it short and specific. Good: “The Etched City by KJ Bishop was an esoteric and bizarre literary fantasy novel published 20 years ago. I’d like to write a piece for Typebar Magazine discussing how both market forces and cultural changes within the SFF sphere have made it more difficult for The Etched City’s mode of creating fantasy literature to exist, to the detriment of the genre. I’ve reviewed books for Awesome Book Website and have also published stories on Cool Website Dot Com. Here is a link to my work…” Less Good: “I want to review The Etched City because it’s a forgotten novel that I think is really cool.” Some Other Tips: Start off with your pitch, and also include a brief bio (particularly highlighting what makes you qualified to be writing the article you’re pitching). Right now our interests include, but are not limited to: The mid-late aughts internet, critical reevaluations of cultural artifacts (ephemera or mainstays) from the 90s and aughts, and typewriters. We don’t have much interest in contemporary film or television and even less in earnest discussion of contemporary mega IPs. More broadly, we like academic-minded but accessible literary criticism and analysis regardless of genre or era. To help get our sense of taste and what we like to publish, read prior issues of the magazine in our archives!

Call to Power has five epochs or “ages” that the player can progress through: Ancient, Renaissance, Modern, Genetic, and Diamond. The additional two epochs in Call to Power (Genetic and Diamond respectively) are uniquely speculative and filled with biting commentary on both modern and future human potential. Sure, the player progresses throughout all of humanity’s incredible achievements: discovering things like writing systems and industrialization, constructing the Wonders of the World, and even going to space. And then you get… an AI surveillance state (and an “AI Entity” with a chance of revolting against the civ which built it), an escalation of global warming from pollution that threatens the life of the planet itself, and even going to such extreme lengths to advertise products in a “Corporate Republic” society which immediately tanks citizen happiness levels. Hang on. Is… Is it suddenly feeling a little bit too real in here?

Lost Highway is the David Lynch movie that best sums up the current sociopolitical moment, according to @rsbenedict.bsky.social

The term fugue, as in psychogenic fugue, Lynch’s description of Lost Highway, carries a double meaning. In psychology, it refers to a dissociative mental state. But in music, a fugue is a type of composition where one or two themes are repeated, echoed by different voices and woven together. This is the structure of Lost Highway, where actors play multiple characters, where Fred duplicates himself in Pete and makes the same mistakes over and over again. It’s also where we are as a society after the End of History, stuck in the backseat as an increasingly unhinged gerontocracy drives us around in circles, feeding their dated self-aggrandizing illusion with violence against imaginary deviants, a blood-drenched Möbius strip, a ride going nowhere down a lost highway.

We are living in the stupidest possible timeline. We are surrounded on all sides by singing pachyderms and pole-dancing ghouls. This world is a farce—a tragic comedy. But the fact that the news is sometimes funny doesn’t make it any less horrifying. This is a story whose plot moves deathward. As Don DeLillo wrote in White Noise, that is the nature of plots. Given their druthers, the rhinos would gleefully trample us all to death. And zombies wearing pasties would descend from their stripper poles to feast on our pulverized flesh. But unlike Berenger, we humans need not stand alone. Not yet, at least. It remains to be seen if we can learn from the stories of the past before it is too late.

Because while I was addicted to these movies, I had to admit that each one was a train wreck. But stranger still, each picture seemed to be the same train wreck. They all had posters painted by the artist, Boris Vallejo. They all cast actress María Socas in supporting roles. They were all shot in Argentina with Argentine extras and buff American leading men. As it turned out, they were all produced by the same guy, Roger Corman, who produced 10 extremely low budget movies in Argentina throughout the ‘80s. Almost all of them were Sword and Sorcery-style fantasy. But why? If it was a cost saving measure, then surely there were cheaper locations than Argentina. And why fantasy? The costumes and magic presumably drove up production costs. No matter what angle I sliced the question, my journey kept bringing me back to Pretoria, South Africa on November 8th, 1975 for that year’s Mr Olympia bodybuilding competition.
