Maybe 20-25 years ago might be more accurate, but the gist of what I meant is the same.
You could call early experimental electronic music a forerunner of that sort of thing, but I'd say it was very, very different.

I'm talking about mainstream EDM/synth pop/hip-hop- the kind you constantly hear playing in ads or grocery stores and such. It drives me crazy that it's still treated like the latest thing when it's basically identical to what was mainstream decades ago.
