My latest piece, TATTOO, is *free* to download through August 1 – solo piano, quiet and spacious, unfolding like breath.

After that, it’s $15.

An urgent update:

I shared this yesterday on FB and IG, and can’t forget about sharing it here, too.

After about five years, it’s time for new headshots.

As always, it’s nice to be married to an über talented photographer (Susanna Hancock, who is Bluesky-less). Extra thankful for her patience wielding my Minolta X700.

Shot on #cinestill400d with some lite touchups. #35mm

A closer look. This is what I landed on: a graphical representation of these textures I imagine in my head.
April 12, 2025 at 6:22 PM
I’m working my way through the second part now.

I’ve never made music that looks like this or behaves this way, and I sincerely hope it isn’t superfluous.

My thought process has been: how can I obfuscate any sense of pulse within the performer, so they just play gestures that breathe in time?
April 12, 2025 at 6:22 PM
Again, this is like… literally a tattoo. The music increases in density as time goes on.

The piece, btw, is in 2 movements (I really see them more as “parts”), and perhaps the second part is tattoo shading, compared to the first movement, which might be more akin to line work.
April 12, 2025 at 6:20 PM
This moment in the piece, about four minutes from the start, is when things finally start looking like traditionally notated music (mostly).
April 12, 2025 at 6:19 PM
I have to credit my wife, Susanna Hancock (who is not on Bluesky - but also a composer everyone should know) for helping me arrive at this idea of “regular” music and metric time slowing coming into focus.
April 12, 2025 at 6:18 PM
A closer look at the first occurrence of this “glitchy” gesture.

The performance indication is inspired by the artist who gave me my first tattoo (I was 19). Whenever I asked him, “how does this (ink staying in the skin) work,” he responded drily, “you know how a sewing machine works?”
April 12, 2025 at 6:16 PM
Over time, more and more musical information is filled in, as the piece begins to be more attached to a metric grid (loosely speaking) while still inhabiting this spatial environment.

Like, you know a literal tattoo coming into image
April 12, 2025 at 6:15 PM
The piece is titled “TATTOO” which has some metaphorical implications I’ll share later, but the piece is also literally modeled after the process of tattooing.

I’ve thought long and hard about how time and rhythm are conveyed in this piece and landed on this quasi-graphic/spatial notation

I’m feeling excited about some directions my current project is heading in, so I’m going to share some sneak peeks of the score.

This is still very much a work in progress… and has been for like 3 years, but things are feeling close.

From last month in State College, PA - shot on #KodakColorPlus w/ #Minoltax700

The guy saw me with my camera and told me, “hold on a second and I’ll get you the money shot.” He certainly did.

like I’m always doing bullshit like this in my music which was such a drag to get right in Finale… now it takes such little effort it blows my mind.

(also praying the hand crossings on this work well / that this passage is possible to play, because it’s one of my favorite things I’ve ever written)
