Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Let's not forget for a second that AI is now overwhelmingly an oligarchic project.

AI is not designed to answer questions, it is designed to generate an answer. It’s going to take a lot of people a long time and a lot of wasted money to understand how different those two things are.

Say it after me: Chat GPT is not a search engine. It does not scan the web for information, it just generates statistically likely sentences. You cannot use it a search engine, or as a substitute for searching.

Now. Please never use an LLM for information searches ever again.

A little interruption from the elections and doom cycles from down south. It’s pics like these that make we want to start printing again.

I keep catching strays from "technology is neutral" people, so let's set things straight.

1) Technology is not neutral, especially the subset of technology called "algorithms"
2) The form-factor that makes a technology into a tool is not neutral
3) How tools are productized is not neutral

This is what a leader looks like.
Wow. Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum officially recognizes Palestine as a state. Here she welcomes Palestinian ambassador Nadya Rasheed.

Sheinbaum is Jewish, supports Palestinian self-determination, & unapologetically condemns Netanyahu's attacks on Gaza.

Historic & inspiring leadership. ❤️✊🏽

Lots of uproar and confusion about how it will be possible for Elon to sort through the millions of federal workers emails about their jobs from the weekend. Obvious answer? AI. Which should scare workers. We’re pairing neoliberal austerity with techo-monarchy/oligopoly. This should surprise nobody.

The use of AI as a source of what people think of as “reliable” information paired with the destruction of institutions of research and knowledge in the U.S. is truly terrifying and will not end well.

My new office/library setup at home is finally settled in a bit. Including a red version of the Henderson Boomerang chair that I wrote my masters/upcoming book in.

BREAKING NEWS: CDC orders mass retraction and revision of submitted research across all science and medicine journals. Banned terms must be scrubbed.

Goes beyond MMWR +other CDC pubs. Applies to research already submitted to top medical journals.

Take a look.

The Nazis had IBM, the Trump neo-Nazis will have OpenAI. It will serve the same purpose.
I said it before and, and I'm saying it now: This is still such a terrible idea.

Why do people who seem otherwise intelligent and competent keep suggesting GenerativeAI as a solution to problems that require accurate information when the one thing it can’t deliver is…accurate information?

Section 23 of Nietzsche’s The Birth of Tragedy, along with On Truth and Lying in a Non-moral sense, have to be two of my favourite philosophical writings.

A very small part of me hopes consciousness can be emulated in AI purely with the hope that it will experience debilitating migraines.
Hell, give it a body too so it can know what nerve pain feels like. And fuck with its eyes so it gets visions stains and auras.
