blind, autistic, ADHD: software engineer, focusing on accessibility 🏳️‍⚧️
Users have the ability to customize how certain words//phrases etc. are announced. You also kinda just get use to it over time. Meaning, it’s not a d4 unique problem, but imperfection in accessible comms in general. Feel free to reach out on discord @tyleniphe. 💙

The tts gap you're identifying is actually one of the best parts about the game, imho. they allow users to lean into their own tts engines; e.G. if you're playing on the pc, you can use narator, nvda, jaws, etc. screen readers are powerful but brittle assistive technologies...

Part of it is because of the iinterconnected nature of the nav assist itself. From a design and dev prospective, it was incredibly complex to land, in part because it threaded across every dev team and branch across the entire project, from efX to environment and everything in between.

From a blind player's prospective, there is no other game today that allows for maximal agency, competitive equity, or independence. Could it be better? Sure, but as an engineer myself, I understand the complexities of large code bases in a corporate ecosystem.

for acute changes is part of my everyday experience. Shortly after launch, ign interviewed me regarding the experience, you could check that out, but in short, D4 has loads of both implicit and explicit accessibility features which are outstanding. I cannot speek to low-vision access, but... 4/

I think our engagement with the world is different. For me, wwearing a headset, the d4 world comes to life. I can pinpoint exact locations of mobs. I can hear the echo as my blades hit walls as a rogue main, I don't find it restrictive what-so-ever. I've also been blind for 24 years, so listening 3/

Navigation outside of the overworld assist is one part memory, one part listening to Environmental cues and using irl orientation and mobility techniques for categorization. The team is working on more finite nav assist for dungeons, though imo it’s unnecessary today. 2/

loot/rarity configurations are set in the options menu, near the end of sounds iirc. Navigation assist—a recent addition—is also enabled via the options menu. I posted a youtube tutorial explaining the nav assist on youtube 1/

Down with the flew, so I'll try to reread this thread again, but Anna's arguments are...not good lol. 🫶

You've picked a weird hill to die on with D4 lol. The team has done some amazing work, and I'm excited to see what comes next. /end.

No other arpg has combined audio effects in a way that I can hear minor echos off impacts and pivet through a dungeon in under 5 minutes. No other ARPG has empowered blind players to play at the same level as content creators who play the game for endless hours 3/

Text to speech irregularities are par for the course, as tts customizability in dictionary is often controlled by the user. If you don't like iv over 4, change the settings to reflect your preference. 2/

Lol, the audio engineering in Diablo 4 is top knotch; what are you on about? As a totally blind player, I was able to complete the entire game, including uber lillith on hardcore. The team has done an amazing job on accessibility. 1/

I was just talking to a coworker about trains last week. There is no better transportation in the world! I love trains. It’s not because I'm autistic and blind... or maybe, not entirely lol.
