The illustrations to this grand edition by the Folio Society are by Laura Carlin. Her drawings mirror the text beautifully, combining the threat of the outside world with the safety of Will’s home. The cosy interiors are filled with natural elements, the exteriors thawed by bright spots of colour.

Susan Cooper says she wrote the book after she had moved to America and was suffering from homesickness. It’s that memory and distance that gives Dark is Rising its peculiar dreamlike quality, one that matches the Christmas season with its ever present sense of nostalgia, perfectly.

Susan Cooper draws on the deep, strange magic of the winter solstice. Her words together with Laura Carlin's artwork conjure up the Buckinghamshire landscapes in a vivid, hyperreal way that leave the reader constantly unsettled.

"The snow lay thin and apologetic over the world… All the broad sky was grey, full of more snow that refused to fall."

The Dark is Rising opens on December 21st, the shortest day. Our hero Will Stanton is waiting for his eleventh birthday and the snow that will just not fall.

The dark adds another layer of quiet to the already muffled pages whose muted tones are a salve against some of the primary coloured Christmas illuminations that surround us at this time of year. 5/5

But full gratification is delayed until the final act, when mother and child finally set out into the white city where night has fallen – another unusual element in a picture book set in winter. 4/5

The coming of the snow is just the beginning. The agony of a child waiting to go outside is amplified by the confines of their high rise home. Together on the balcony, the snow offers a moment of quiet contemplation as the city comes to a halt. 3/5

Like Beatrix Potter, Komako Sakai creates anthropomorphic animals we can happily accept in an incongruous setting. Pains have been taken to make this world of tower blocks and sodium lamps feel like somewhere a rabbit mother and child might live. 2/5

The Snow Day by Komako Sakai is a rare winter themed picture book set in an urban environment, the most famous example of which is Ezra Jack Keats’s similarly titled The Snowy Day. 1/5

On a visit to Briggs's home in 1973, Kaye Webb spotted a painting of Father Christmas relaxing in the bath. His publisher had rejected the image as the cover to his latest book and Kaye immediately seized it for the winter edition of Puffin Post magazine.

Sniffup! Raymond Briggs was good friends with the legendary Puffin Books editor Kaye Webb. Despite his reputation for being more grumpy than Father Christmas he found himself sucked into Kaye’s world of Puffin Club outings and general merriment 1/2 #TygertaleAdvent
