I suspect there are other errors or omissions in this article. Wonder what the ‘other videos‘ were.

As a teacher I’d like to teach FS2. I find FS1 emphasis on DRVs a bit dull.

I taught D1 a while ago, probably the hardest exam Qs to unpick in terms of the way they were written (not the maths)

We do (Edexcel) FS1 and FM1. overall works best for our students. Previously we have done FP1/FS1 or FP1/FM1 and occasionally D1. I think FP1 is best for those who want to study uni maths but we found weaker students do better with stats/mech…

Sketching is my preference; some students I teach struggle with quickly sketching and comparing

Can be useful for students to quickly see if the trigfn of an angle is + or -, eg if x is reflex and cos x = 5/13 what is cot x

Similar thing happened to me recently and I teach in a sixth form. Of course I couldn’t actually remember teaching the parent. I’m told the time to worry is when you first teach the grandchildren of former students. I’m hoping to be retired before then.

Teachers don’t teach but motivate? So we need motivators not teachers.

I did. And again in the FT this morning. Guess you’re referring to payment deferral options?

Many people who live in a £1M house could not afford £5,000/yr especially in London where even a modest house is so expensive. For many it would be a tax on their debt not their wealth. Others eg pensioners would be forced out their homes. A heartless policy.

Bit old but I do like to show this to my students. From grahamcumming.bsky.social I think.

We do encourage girls to do further maths, where they are still underrepresented but I don’t see much effort to encourage boys to do English despite such low numbers. It’s not just that the girls aren’t choosing say FM but that boys choose so narrowly.

Not sure about better instruction. I’ve been interviewing prospective A level students for over 20 years and their algebra skills are worse now than 20 years ago, although maybe bit better than just a few years ago.

A level maths teacher here. For us (6th form college) we now see more students combining maths with economics. Maths with science has stayed steady but the increase in econ A level numbers seems to have spilled over to maths.

Have they tightened up on use of units in the last few years? I seem to remember that omitting units rarely lost a mark at A level.
We had someone, 1 mark off an A*, who lost a mark for not putting metres or m.
Any tips for helping students remember units (apart from going on about it as we do).

I first came across Tom Lehrer some 40 years ago when I was trying to get my head around some non Euclidean geometry problems (I never really succeeded) and heard a recording of ‘Lobachevsky’. Maybe he has gone to the eternal triangle.

Ive seen a couple of fakes too. One looked identical but the student kept making what I thought were input errors. Both the ones I saw were bought on temu.

Is there a way to view the modified paper - I can’t find it anywhere.
