the number of frighteningly illegal---like, unbelievably unconstitutional, full on Revolutionary War-levels of outrages---things that happened over the last 43 days is too long to list. and we're supposed to go back to work tomorrow and pretend it never happened. neat!

for people with significant savings or a partner in private industry, this was rough but manageable. for families where both parents are feds, particularly with kids in daycare, losing funds for two mortgage payments on top of everything else was devastating. and for what?

Boy, I wish I was born with this kind of power. I'm sensitive to caffeine and generally have to split a Coke over two days, but this stuff is like unlocking your third eye. Shame about it being a dangerously addictive stimulant!

But wait! Government shutdowns have happened before but SNAP has never been defunded, why is it happening now? - Because the government refuses to use the money available to fund SNAP. We do in fact have the resources and ability to fund it but the government refuses to do so, because cruelty.

What's going on? - The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will be defunded because of the ongoing government shutdown. This means recipients will not have benefits available November 1st. SNAP isn't small - about 42 million Americans (12%) use it, and roughly half are children.

our house is over 100 years old so we are part of a long lineage of idiots and every day during renovations our general contractor points out something and goes "why is it like this" and, sir, we don't know either
