Yes. I recreated that scene from the OG Walking With Dinosaur. But without the Araucaria tree because I cannot draw plants. And the Tyrannosaurus is now more balanced and more scientifically accurate. Depicts a Tyrannosaurus making a call just before dusk.

There are giants, and there are giants. And then there's Ichthyotitan severnensis. The largest marine reptile to ever exist... that we know of. The remains were fragmentary, with several bones from the lower jaw surangular were discovered at Westbury Formation in UK, from Lilstock and Blue Anchor. The two specimens yielded an estimated size of between 23-25m or possibly slightly larger, but if a specimen from Aust Cliff was proven to be an Ichthyotitan, it could grow even larger, with maximum estimated length of 30 to 35m. And that's not even the end of it, for the Aust Cliff colossus showed signs that it still grows. Absolutely insane.

This March I'll be celebrating the prehistoric marine life of the Mesozoic era. To start, we have the big-headed (literally) pliosaur Megacephalosaurus eulerti.

Megacephalosaurus eulerti, one of the last surviving member of thalassophonean pliosaurids, the so-called 'sea murderers'. Being a large brachauchenine, Megacephalosaurus had relatively short neck and rather long head, accounting to up to a quarter of its total length.

Iguanodon bernissartensis, a type of hadrosauriform dinosaur living during Barremian age of early Cretaceous, about 125mya in what is now UK, Belgium, Spain and Germany. Historically a wastebasket taxon, only one species is now considered valid. Hard to believe, 200 years since the term 'Dinosauria' first coined by Richard Owen, now we have more than 1000 species of non-avian dinosaurs alongside more than 11000 extant species of avian dinosaurs. Birds, to you and me. From teeny tiny 5cm Bee Hummingbird to gigantic 35m Argentinosaurus, from fruit-munching touracos to bone-shattering Tyrannosaurus, from questionable Spinosaurus to toucan hopping around your living room looking for his favourite plushie, dinosaurs are among the most diverse group of tetrapoda ever to walk the Earth.

I always wanted to take photo of cormorants for ages. Sure, this is just a Little Black Cormorant (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris) and not the fabulous Red-Legged Cormorant, but for now it's good enough for me.

Is this how cormorants displaying to others? Seems so. Did not expect to see a pair of Little Black Cormorants (Phalacrocorax sulcirostris) doing what looked like a mating display. One of my favourite close up of the Little Black Cormorant. That greenish-blue eye is just so gorgeous, amazing contrast to the predominantly black cormorant.

Giant Trevally (Caranx ignobilis), the largest member of genus Caranx as well as 5th-largest carangids. At 170cm and 80kg max, Giant Trevally is a chonky thing. And being big and fast allowed GT to be apex predator in and around coastal and reef waters around Indian and Pacific Ocean. Not only big, GTs are aggressive. So aggressive they will ram blacktip reef sharks, often resulting in shark being dead. And if it isn't enough, GT around Farquhar Atoll has a certain habit of catching sooty tern fledglings learning to fly... on the air. Yes. They will leap out of the water and grab tern mid-air.

Elasmosaurids are some of my favourite marine reptiles. Here's my fav, Aristonectes parvidens, looking to hoover up some tasty euphausiids. If only it realised something's been noticing it.

Aristonectes parvidens, one of the weirdest elasmosaur ever to exist. When you think of elasmosaur, you think of marine reptiles with extremely long neck, small head, short body and four flippers. Aristonectes seemed to go against that direction by having basically flattened body, ridiculously long flippers, moderately sized neck, horizontal fluke like a whale and relatively bigger head with weird, outward-projecting tooth used to filter foods. In fact all aristonectines are just weird.

I remember the first time I learned about archerfish back when I was 3. It was truly fascinating as to how they solve the issue of wave refraction. Still fascinating today.

Banded Archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix). This unassuming 20cm-long fish has two fascinating skills: Firepower and ability to solve light refraction. Basically archerfishes uses its tongue, its palate, and one quick closing of its operculum to shoot water upwards, knocking any small animals above the water surface off their perch for the fish to eat. But shooting something through different medium poses an issue: Refraction. Young archerfishes gather together to practice target shooting, and they learn how to calculate the right angle to compensate for light refraction. In controlled environment, archerfish can be trained to hit moving targets with >50% accuracy rate. If target shooting failed, however, they can always resort to jumping. They're practical like that.

My mum said back when I was a kid (when we visited SeaWorld once every 2 months) Pirarucu was always my favourite. Oh and she refered to it as Arapaima gigas, its scientific name. Now you see where the geek in me came from.

Side profile of Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas). As you can see, those albino shark catfishes and tambaqui aren't exactly small, but pirarucu just monstered them all in terms of size. Dunno what this pirarucu was up to, it yawned. Also, despite being a fish, pirarucu need to occasionally gulp fresh air to complement oxygen from water. Hence why if you cut its swim bladder it looks abnormally lung-like.

Why did I say that I duped you all?

Because this is how it looked like originally. All blue and purple. So out comes the derided Photoshop and my trusted pentab, and all the basic knowledge about cephalopod. Boom. Recoloured. The old-school way.
The original photo. It was all blue and purple because Pacific Giant Octopus can't stand bright lights for too long it seems. So the aquarium needs to be dimly lit.

Pacific Giant Octopus (Enteroctopus dofleini), one of the largest species of octopus currently alive. Weighing at 15kg and with arm span of around 4m, only Seven Arm Octopus - a name that makes no sense but it is true - that can exceed it in terms of weight at estimated 75kg.
