Took students to visit San Jose State this past week, taking in campus, city environs, and protests they wanted to join in on.

Last week, outreach and community folks at our local community college (shout out HPN/TRIO at Chabot) hosted my students working and dreaming for their futures. This is everyday work for them. But it is transformative and necessary, the daily labor of equity.

Another exhausting week of teaching. Ed Dept cuts, another sign of troubled times. My and other friends’ positions cut bc district budget crisis. Woke at the usual 5:30am but on a Saturday, walked to the great local diner (Fifth Wheel, San Leandro), and let coffee, sausage, and kim chee console me.

Taking my middle school students to Berkeley a couple days after the election renews my sense of purpose and hope. I fret and fear, and perhaps rightfully. But they forge forward. They’re going to build and fight better.

In 2016, I wondered how I’d explain this to my 5 year old when she woke.
Now, I hold on to hope because I know tomorrow we wake to fight together. With love, with truth, with solidarity with the most marginalized.
